How Can I Tell If I Have Ice Dam Damage on My Roof in Aitkin?
1/9/2024 (Permalink)
Our local Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties teams mitigate and restore ice dam damage throughout the winter. Ice dams can cause wet insulation primarily through a process of melting and refreezing of snow and ice on your roof. Here's how it happens:
Snow Accumulation: During winter, snow accumulates on your roof. When the temperature inside your attic is above freezing due to heat escaping from your home, it can warm the underside of the roof.
Melting and Drainage: The warmth from your attic causes the snow on the upper part of the roof to melt. As the water flows downward, it reaches the eaves, which are typically colder because they extend beyond the heated living space.
Ice Formation: When the melted water reaches the eaves, it encounters colder air and refreezes, forming an ice dam. This ice dam acts as a barrier that prevents further melted snow from draining off the roof.
Water Backups: With nowhere else to go, the trapped water can find its way under your shingles and into the attic space. Once inside, it can come into contact with the insulation in your attic.
Insulation Saturation: Over time, as more snow melts and water infiltrates your attic, it can saturate the insulation. Wet insulation loses its effectiveness as an insulator and may become compressed, leading to reduced R-value and potential mold growth.
