Tornado Sweeps Through Aitkin County?
8/5/2022 (Permalink)
August 6 marked the 53rd anniversary of the tornado that swept through Aitkin County in 1969. The tornado damaged thousands of acres of land and caused more than $500,000 in property damage. Our Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties have been restoring storm damage in Aitkin for years. Here is some information about tornadoes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:
How many tornadoes occur in the U.S. each year?
- About 1,200 tornadoes hit the U.S. yearly
- Since official tornado records only date back to 1950, we do not know the actual average number of tornadoes that occur each year
- Tornado spotting and reporting methods have changed a lot over the last several decades, so we are observing more tornadoes that actually happen
Where is Tornado Alley?
Tornado Alley is a nickname invented by the media to refer to a broad area of relatively high tornado occurrence in the central United States. Various “Tornado Alley” maps look different because tornado occurrence can be measured many ways: by all tornadoes, tornado county-segments, strong and violent tornadoes only, and databases with different time periods.
