Facts About Minnesota Tornadoes

Storms and severe weather events come with living in Northern Minnesota, and according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) June, July, and August are good months for tornadoes to hit the continental United States and Southern Canada. The DNR report also notes that Minnesota lies along the north edge of Tornado Alley, the region of maximum tornado occurrence in the United States. Here are some more interesting facts from the DNR about Minnesota tornadoes:
- Tornadoes occur most often between 2:00 PM and 9:00 PM (but they can and do occur at any time of the day and night
- Late spring and early summer are the most probable danger periods in Minnesota
- Groups or outbreaks of tornadoes often last from three to twelve hours
- On June 10, 2010, forty-eight tornadoes affected twenty-two counties in Minnesota over a six-hour period
