Tis the Season of Bursting Pipes
2/23/2021 (Permalink)
A frigid blizzard hits and the temperature drops well below freezing. You had set the thermostat low at the cabin to be conservative and now the pipes are frozen. A couple weeks later as the weather is warmer, you go to the cabin to check on it and find water everywhere from the pipes bursting as they started to thaw. What now? Call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St Louis Counties to extract the water and mitigate any damages from the water.
Tips to avoid this disaster
Insulate the pipes to reduce the risk of freezing. The pipes with the highest risk of freezing are pipes in the basement, the supply line in the garage or the lines passing through the attic.
Seal off any drafty areas such as around windows or doors.
Drip the faucets to keep water flowing or a better option would be to winterize the cabin and shut off the water supply.
