Dead Christmas Tree Causes Fire Damage in Hill City?
1/3/2023 (Permalink)
Our teams in Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties wish everyone in Hill City a Happy New Year! After Christmas, the National Fire Protection Association wants everyone to get rid of the tree when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage or placed outside against the house. Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.
FACTS
- Electrical problems cause almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires
- Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious
- A heat source too close to the tree causes more than one in every five the fires
Can I Burn My Old Christmas Tree in my Fireplace or Fire Pit?
No! Coniferous needles contain nitrogen and substances called terpenes which are highly toxic when burned. Burning Christmas trees will make the smoke in your fire pit unsafe for you and others around your fire pit to breathe.
The best way to dispose of your Christmas tree is to recycle it or take it to your local landfill. Check with local authorities to see if there are special collection days for Christmas trees.
